Peace as a value: the role of Buddhist practice
Peace can hold a place of greater or lesser importance in the value system of each individual. Also, to achieve a peaceful society requires a concrete commitment at all levels of society, a commitment in which not everyone can participate effectively in the same way. We asked ourselves if a decision to adhere to a group that considers peace to be at the root of being able to live together (as practiced by the Buddhist community, Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai, ISG) could play a role in shaping a value system of an individual, and whether a therapist who supports the spread of living together in peace could be seen as valuable. In particular it seemed interesting to us to study a group that encourages its members to study peace from a philosophical – theoretical perspective and in the face of difficulty in relationships to practice peaceful means such as respect, dialogue, compassion.
